A unique region festival ‘Meghraja Festival’ celebrated in the month of Shravan (August–Sept) for 25 days in Bharuch. Meghraja festival is celebrated by the “Bhoi” community for about last 200 years in Bhoiwad area of Bharuch. In this festival, a statue of Meghraja (Lord Indra) is made up from the soil of river Narmada and is worshiped for 25 days. A Meghraja Festival celebrated during last 4 days.
This festival is celebrated only in Bharuch in whole of India. The statue of Lord Indra is made by the soil on the night of “AshadhVadChaudash” according to Gujarati calendar. The height of this statue of Meghraja is 5.5 foot.

This traditional fair is organised during “ShravanVadSatam – Dasham” and Bhoi community made a very tall bamboo stick known as “Chhadi” and worshipped. After 25 days of festival, on the dasham statue of meghraja is submerged in the Narmada River.
The history behind celebrating the Meghraja fair is, about 200 years agothe Bhoi descendants faced a dry drought. So, they decided to praise the lord of the rain, Meghraja (Lord Indra), but they didn't get any success. Because of this, they wrathfully warned against Meghraja statue that if the rain won’t come in the next morning, they will deform the statue of Meghraja. Hearing this, like a miracle Meghraja praised and the rain is come in the next morning.After that day, The Bhoi community celebrates this festival as Meghraja Festival every year. |
