Uparkot Caves is situated in Junagadh District Gujarat India. Uparkot is very famous place in Junagadh. Junagadh is a historical place in Gujarat. In Junagadh many ancient places are located. The Uparkot Caves is also known as the Buddhist Caves. On the North West side of the Jama masjid is located caves. It is constructed in the 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
Buddhist Uparkot Caves are not caves but the place to stay for the Buddhist monk in rainy season. It is 2000 years old. There are three parts of the caves. It has two floors. The upper floor of the cave have deep tank on three sides having a porch or balcony on North West part. Hall and pillar on the lower floor of the Uparkot Caves. The pillar has been carved of Graeco- Scythian style of the Satvahana.
The rock-cut pillars have been carved beautifully. The wall of Buddhist caves Uparkot is engraved with their Ex-rulers, king and god icons. Statue of Lord Hanuman and Shakti Devi are carved on the rock wall of the cave. The cave of Junagadh has a meditation hall with windows of horseshoe shape. There is a canal of 300 ft deep and in that crocodiles are living.
The old generation told the history of kings and they feel pride of that this is a historical place in India. There are two rules of Neelam and Manek bring from the other country. The Junagadh Buddhist Cave is safety place at the time of war with the enimes because it is underground cave. We can hide in the cave for the protection. On the upper floor there are water tanks. |
