What is Hair Transplantation? :
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the 'donor site' to bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness.
Hair transplantation can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.
Surgical methods :
In today’s technically advanced world, harvesting and transplanting naturally occurring 1–4 hair "follicular units" in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair.
This hair transplant procedure is called Follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Donor hair can be harvested two different ways: strip harvesting, and follicular unit extraction (FUE).
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) :
In follicular unit transplantation (FUT) method, patient’s hair is transplanted in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. In FUT, the small units allow the surgeon to safely transplant thousands of grafts in a single session.
In this method a strip of tissue is removed from occipital region. The gap is closed with absorbable sutures. Assistants’ separates each graft from the strip under magnification. Then each graft is transplanted in front. Stitches take 2 to 3 weeks to dissolve. Patient feels pain and discomfort in back for 2 weeks.
In strip method a linear scar remain on occipital region. If patient keep hair ½ inch long then it will not visible, but if patient go for modern buzz cut then a linear scar will remain visible. A recent method trichophytic closure is there by that you can grow hair through scar.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) :
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a modern technique and also known as stitches less and scar less procedure. In this method, individual follicular units are extracted. Healing is very fast in 2 to 3 days after operation. Patient can start working from next day. He/she can join gymnasium from 4th or 5th day.
It does not leave any linear scar so patient can keep hair short. In strip method there are chances of keloid development while in FUE no chances of keloid. As it is a lengthy procedure it cost almost double then strip/FUT method.
In surgery the era is of laparoscopic surgery because of minimum cutting so faster healing and less downtime. Same is for FUE as minimum cutting so faster healing; less downtime- patient can join duty from next day onwards.
There are some assessments to check the proper reason for hair loss which includes detailed personal and family history, examination of hair and scalp, scalp biopsy, blood tests and nutritional assessments. Patients with hair and scalp disorders should receive a thorough evaluation and an accurate diagnosis before formulation of an appropriate treatment plan.
